Holding open a door, offering assistance, and complimenting someone are all random acts of kindness. Every small interaction with someone is an opportunity to have a positive impact on their lives, and maybe to make their day.

Corina Cacicovschi, a math teacher at AISB, decided one day that she wanted to make a positive impact on the students at the school. It all started when she realized students spend more time awake at school than at home. Wanting students to feel at home, she brought around dozens of fruits with her and put a full basket in both high school and middle school common areas.

“I’m hoping that every student will have a fruit at break or for a snack, you eat something healthy and don’t have to go to the cafeteria and wait in line,” she says.

She started this act of kindness in November, paying for the daily fruit baskets herself. The school started supporting her efforts by paying for the fruit in December. The PTO has recently taken over the budget for the rest of the school year and has arranged for the cafeteria to buy the fruit, wash it, and fill the baskets.

Cacicovschi states that, “School environments should be one where you feel comfortable, feel happy, you can learn, you can make mistakes and learn from them. [It should be] an environment in which you feel just as well as you do at home.”

Walking into Cacicovschi’s classroom full of plants and sunlight, you automatically feel at home. She strongly believes that making a school environment feel cozy and like home will make students happier and at ease.

Many students appreciate the act of kindness she has brought to the school that benefits students in many different ways.

“I think the basket of fruits is a very considerate idea, because when it’s cold outside and I’m hungry, instead of going out in the cold to get a snack, there are fruits in the hallway,” a 9th grader said.

The cost of the fruits per day is approximately 50 lei. As Cacicovschi started this act of kindness to give back to the community, donations are much appreciated. The amount donated per day varies from 0-40 lei.

Cacicovschi’s act of kindness turned into a continuous gesture of compassion, so hopefully, as this act continues, it inspires people to give back to the community with small acts of kindness that can bring joy. Knowing that you have the power to change someone’s life for the better by practicing a random act of kindness is inspiring, and the world needs more people with that sort of mentality.
