Everyone knows that Mexican food is definitely one of the best and most popular cuisines in the entire world, and for good reason. Authentic Mexican cuisine is rich in flavor, great spice combinations, and amazing texture combos. Despite all this, it can be quite hard to find authentic Mexican restaurants with a nice, mellow atmosphere.

This led to me wanting to show others one of the best Mexican restaurants in Bucharest: Casa de Tacos. It is a small Mexican restaurant tucked in an alley behind the Unirii Shopping Plaza in downtown Bucharest. TripAdvisor.com ranks it among the top Mexican restaurants here in Bucharest, alongside restaurants like El Torito and Mexikanos. This makes it clear that it is a great spot, whether you want to grab a quick lunch or sit down and have a big dinner; no matter which, Casa de Tacos has got you covered.

This past December, my friend, grade 9 student Max M., and I went to Casa de Tacos for this review and to showcase this spectacular restaurant to the AISB community.

I will be rating the food—how it tastes, its textures, the variety of dishes on the menu, and its authenticity. I will also be rating the atmosphere, the number of people, the music, the sounds, and the cleanliness. Another thing I will be reviewing is the service — how the waiters/waitresses treat the customers, as well as how long it takes for the food to come. The final thing I will be reviewing is the cost, mainly on how affordable the restaurant is, and whether the food is worth the price.

Atmosphere & Cost

The atmosphere at the restaurant was great, and Mexican/Spanish music played the whole time we were there. On the walls in the restaurant, there were a lot of traditional Mexican decorations, with bright colours and Mexican scenes.

Also, the restaurant was not very crowded whatsoever; there were some people but there were still a few tables left. It really depends on what time of day and year you are going to the restaurant. As the restaurant space is small, I would recommend going late in the afternoon for a late lunch.

The cost of the food was moderately expensive. We ordered a huge portion from the menu, including drinks, two bowls of nachos, a plate of five different tacos, two quesadillas, and a dessert, and we paid about 300 lei for two. Our order could easily feed up to three people.

For downtown Bucharest, the prices are slightly higher than average, but lower than a fancy restaurant along Herestrau Lake or in Snagov.

In the end, we rate the atmosphere of the restaurant a 9/10 and the cost of the food we rate at an 8/10.

Service

The overall service was great. The servers were extremely kind and accommodating towards us. Considering how much we ordered, the food didn’t take much time to come out whatsoever, and the servers were always ready if we wanted to order any more food.

In the end, we rate the overall service of the restaurant a 9/10.

Food & Drinks

The food in the restaurant was amazing and they had something for everyone, with a widely varied menu. We tried to order as many things as possible so we could get the biggest variety from the menu as we could.

The Drinks

Jumex Guanabana flavour – Native Mexican drink, founded in 1961, it has a very refreshing, tangy, and sweet taste. Amazing drink, we rate it 9/10

Jumex coconut pineapple flavour – Extremely sweet and refreshing, possibly even too sweet, and hard to finish due to the sweetness of the drink. We rate it a 6/10

The Nachos

Totopos con guacamole – Amazing, crunchy perfectly salted nachos, topped with a pure and authentic guacamole. Both the nachos and guacamole were absolutely incredible, we rate it 10/10

Nachos de la casa – Amazing nachos, topped with amazing ground pork, melted cheese, and the absolutely amazing guacamole. A poor thing about the dish was that there was a very small amount of guacamole compared to the amount of meat, so that drops a point or two. We rate it 9/10

Nachos de la casa.

The Tacos

Next we ordered a taco mix, which includes five different kinds of tacos, with one type of each.

Taco al pastor – Great soft tortilla filled with amazing pork, with onions to enhance the flavour more. There was a perfect amount of pork in relation to the size of the tortilla. 9/10

Taco de arrachera – Soft tortilla filled with amazing beef and onions. There is a perfect mixture of onions and beef, with none of the flavours overpowering each other. 10/10

Taco suadero – Tortilla filled with an overpowering amount of onion compared to the beef. Nothing special apart from the onion overpowering the beef. 7/10

Taco cochinita pibil – Soft tortilla filled with onion and absolutely amazing chicken. Great balance between the flavours and it tastes amazing. 10/10

Taco de tinga – Bit bland due to there only being chicken and no onion, but overall basic and good, however it requires a sauce. 7/10

Spicy sauce – Very spicy but there is a great jalapeño flavour and it enhances the flavour of everything. For me it was a 9/10

Taco Mix: Mixed plate of five tacos.

Quesadillas

Chicken quesadilla – Amazing mix of cheese and chicken, the tortilla and charring of it were both spectacular. The quesadilla was very oily. 9/10

Beef quesadilla – Strong beef flavour; couldn’t taste the cheese as much as in the chicken quesadilla. Great tortilla preparation as well. The beef quesadilla was also very oily. 9/10

Lastly, the desserts.

Churros – drizzled in a nice, light dark chocolate sauce, very sweet with a lot of sugar, but tasted great and authentic. 9/10

Final Thoughts

Overall, Casa de Tacos is an absolutely spectacular restaurant that I believe is a must-visit. My overall rating for the entire restaurant would be 9/10, since all of the areas and categories of the restaurant we rated are amazing, especially the food, which I believe is the best part of the restaurant.
