As part of AISB’s Human Rights Week, students from a variety of service learning groups are working together to educate our community about issues around the world.
Today is dedicated to Freedom of Speech, and Amnesty International members Ioana D, David S, and Mara T. have put together a podcast to explore this topic during Romania’s communist era.
You’ll hear AISB local staff members Cristina Cuzuc and Codruta Pohrib, as well as Ioana’s grandfather, share anecdotes from the Romanian revolution, and explain what it was like transitioning from “one of the most repressive states” to a place where you could express yourself freely.
“Words can change worlds and can break down walls… if you have that power, you should use it.” -Cristina Cuzuc.

Dear Ioana, Mara and David, what an amazing piece of journalism! Well done! It gave me goosebumps to remember some of these times and to hear you push people to speak up and affect change. It is due to young people like you that we have higher chances that historical times like the ones that ended in 1989 in Romania will not repeat themselves. Well done!
Dear Miss Gardescu, thank you so much for your comment and your beautiful words! We hope that the podcast will spark meaningful conversation on the privilege to speak and express freely, and will remind everyone that each voice can enact change.
