Grade 7 student Kiera O. has met a lot of different people and discovered new things in her one year (so far) at AISB. Today, she discusses her passion for playing the drums and how different experiences in her life, such as moving, impacted this passion which she holds dear to her heart.Â
What follows is Kiera’s story, in her own words:
I started playing drums in second grade when I was around 7 years old. I’ve always enjoyed drums but I found my passion during COVID [pandemic] when I had a lot of free time to play drums. I’m very passionate about drumming because I’ve always enjoyed music. And so, being able to play an instrument, it helped me be better at comprehending the music I’m listening to and understanding more of the thought process that went into making the song. And it also gives me a deeper connection to the songs. Like, now I enjoy songs that have good drum beats more than songs that don’t. And drums really helped me, like, zone out whenever I’m stressed out.
When I played drums at a show for the first time, it was very thrilling and I was very nervous. But it helped me get over some of my fears of stage fright, and I learned a lot about how to move on if you mess up and how to play drums better.
Probably moving from public school to private school [was the biggest change in my life] because I met a lot of new people who have very different outlooks on life than I do. This school has a lot more opportunities for music, so I get to experiment with drums a lot more, which is a lot of fun.
