What do you get when you make a platform that hosts experiences and games and lets users create their own content so others can enjoy it?
You get Metaverses.
A Metaverse is a digital space where users can game, create, and interact with other users, making it a kind of center for games and digital recreation. First widely popularized with the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, players created accounts for all kinds of Metaverses that grew in popularity, growing into more than just gaming, but rather a place for people to connect regardless of distance.
But which one of these are really the best? Here we’ll count down the Big 3 Metaverses, and see what’s strong and weak about all of them.
3. Rec Room

Rec Room, first released in 2016, has been a notable competitor to other game platform metaverses, known for being widely available on Virtual Reality headsets, which is how you might see a lot of the players if you were to play. It hosts very fun experiences based on user interaction that make for an enjoyable experience if you have a microphone to communicate with.
I personally found myself enjoying more action filled games, such as Prison Life, but enjoying some of the calmer more social games, like the Black Cat. There’s a little something on the platform for everyone, from the games to its efficient character customization.
Even so, it’s far away from perfect. The experiences are visibly not too great in quality and can get really repetitive after a while, which leads to a game loop that can get exhausting quickly. This really ruined the whole experience as it seems like a chore to play for more than 30 minutes. While playing though, some games stood out, they are as follows:
- Prison Life
- TheBlackCat
Overall…it can be fun, but it really depends on your social battery and opinion on social based games. To conclude, Rec Room gets 3 stars out of 5. But, I would highly recommend it if you do like talking, as the experiences created within the platform are great fun for communication.
2. Fortnite

We all know it, and if you hadn’t, you must’ve heard of it sometime during 2017. Originally a zombie shooter, turned Battle Royale, Fortnite has risen up and taken advantage of the Unreal Engine to let users generate their own games and experiences tailored to whatever they may want to play, whether it be hangout, competitive or others, they can make it all and let others create worlds within the platform.
Fortnite is widely known for being a shooter, but it makes a really good platform for all other kinds of games as well, such as rhythm and music based matches with Fortnite Festival, based on Guitar Hero; platforming with Fall Guys modes and many more. Super fun with friends and others. I’ve been playing this way before I wrote this review and I have lots of things to say about this platform, from my time playing Battle Royale and Festival, it’s always been enjoyable, and super unique. Some standouts I found are as follows:
- Fortnite Festival: Main Stage
- Fortnite Battle Royale
- Murder Mystery
While Fortnite is super fun, the user generated experiences I mentioned are worthy competitors, but not nearly as fun as what Fortnite developers themselves release, meaning user generated experiences get a much shorter end of the stick, and don’t get as much reach…which can limit how popular they become.
Overall, it’s really great but there’s improvements to be made, not just within the user generated experiences, but the platform itself, which earns it 4 stars out of 5.
1. Roblox

You probably heard this name a lot during 2020! Roblox is another online platform, hosting millions upon millions of user generated experiences, even passing 8 Billion accounts in 2025! Needless to say, it’s absolutely massive. First being released in 2006, Roblox has grown from a physics engine to a full blown platform, with a wide array of amazing experiences for each and every person.
From constantly filled social games like Brookhaven, to full blown expertly made horror games like Forsaken, Roblox is an incredible platform filled to the brim with ideas being created with the Roblox Studio engine. Some standouts are:
- Brookhaven
- Adopt Me!
- Something Evil Will Happen
- Murder Mystery 2
- Forsaken
- Phighting
- Frozen Soul (DG)
Overall, Roblox gets a 4.5 out 5, as it isn’t perfect…from things like poor AI moderations to just cashgrabby games and experiences. But there are still passion projects to be found on this site, like Frozen Soul, Phighting, Pillar Chase 2 and so many more like them, earning it the top spot. It really does seem like it’s always growing, and there’s always new things to play.
